A National First! 100,000-Household "Hydrogen to Every Home" Project Launched in Weifang

On April 19th, reporters learned from relevant departments that China's first large-scale application project of hydrogen blending into natural gas, covering 100,000 households, was officially launched in Weifang. The project utilizes Weifang's existing urban natural gas pipeline infrastructure to achieve stable hydrogen-blended natural gas transmission and distribution.

 

The hydrogen-blended natural gas project covers 100,000 urban households in Weifang's central urban area, comprehensively encompassing various residential gas usage scenarios, including daily life and commercial catering. Residents can use hydrogen-blended natural gas normally without replacing their existing gas appliances.

 

The demonstration project uses a 30,000 cubic meter natural gas hydrogen blending system, capable of adjusting the hydrogen blending ratio from 0% to 10%. Currently, the project has completed a 5,000 cubic meter per hour water electrolysis hydrogen production system, the first 5.2-kilometer-long urban gas-to-hydrogen pipeline in China, and a leading domestic hydrogen blending-transmission full-process testing platform, with a maximum annual hydrogen consumption capacity of 13 million cubic meters.

 

Deputy director of the National Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Center stated that the "Hydrogen to Every Household" technology demonstration project has bridged the "last mile" in the application of hydrogen energy in urban gas supply, achieving for the first time nationwide a large-scale, long-term, and continuous demonstration application of hydrogen blending. The application of hydrogen blending into natural gas has significant demonstration effects in green electricity consumption, energy security, energy conservation, emission reduction, and carbon reduction.

 

 Preliminary estimates suggest that if hydrogen is blended at a 10% ratio in urban gas consumption nationwide, it can replace approximately 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, correspondingly reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30 million tons.
