The Era of Green Hydrogen Arrives: Why ALK Electrolyzers Remain the Top Choice for Corporate Procurement?

Feb 11, 2026

Against the backdrop of accelerated global energy structure transformation, the costs of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and wind power continue to decline. As water electrolysis hydrogen production technology matures, the cost of green hydrogen is rapidly approaching that of traditional gray hydrogen. Coupled with the rigid demand for global carbon neutrality and deep industrial decarbonization, industries with high emissions and difficulty in electrification, such as steel, chemicals, and shipping, are experiencing explosive growth in demand for zero-carbon hydrogen energy. Simultaneously, increased policy support, accelerated localization of the industrial chain, and the gradual improvement of the carbon market mechanism are creating multiple favorable conditions, propelling green hydrogen beyond the laboratory and demonstration project stage to a point of large-scale, commercial, and profitable industrialization, making it a core track for global energy transition and decarbonization of the real economy.

1. Investment Perspective: Significant Life Cycle Cost Advantages

From the perspective of return on investment and cost control, alkaline electrolyzers demonstrate significant competitive advantages in the current market. At the initial investment level, the cost of a megawatt (MW) PEM electrolyzer is typically more than twice that of an alkaline electrolyzer (although PEM electrolyzers with high current density designs are slightly cheaper). This difference stems from two main aspects: First, PEM electrolyzers require precious metals (such as platinum and iridium) as catalysts, and their bipolar plates often use expensive materials like titanium, while alkaline electrolyzers primarily use nickel-based materials, resulting in a significant difference in material costs. Second, PEM technology is not as mature as alkaline electrolyzers in large-scale commercial applications, especially lacking sufficient large-scale, long-term demonstration projects for verification. Its actual lifespan still largely depends on manufacturers' theoretical estimates, leading to higher investment uncertainty throughout its lifecycle. Therefore, considering the total lifecycle cost, alkaline electrolyzers have a clear economic advantage.

2. Operational Adaptability: Compatible with Fluctuating Renewable Energy Systems

From the perspective of actual operation and system adaptability in green hydrogen projects, alkaline electrolyzers also demonstrate robust performance. The output of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is intermittent and fluctuating. To ensure stable operation of electrolyzers, projects typically configure energy storage systems to mitigate power fluctuations. For example, a lower limit for power output (e.g., 40% of rated power) can be set. When renewable energy output falls below this threshold, the energy storage system supplements power, thereby minimizing the impact of fluctuations on the electrolyzer. Although PEM electrolyzers theoretically have a wider load adjustment range (e.g., 10%-120%), frequent and rapid load fluctuations accelerate material aging and performance degradation. In contrast, alkaline electrolyzers, with a "renewable energy + energy storage" system configuration, can achieve stable, efficient, and long-term operation in a more economical way, further consolidating their mainstream position in current green hydrogen projects.

3. Industry Support: Mature Supply Chain Ensures Long-Term Project Stability

Furthermore, the alkaline electrolyzer industry chain is relatively complete, with economies of scale gradually emerging. Equipment manufacturing, operation and maintenance services, and spare parts supply are becoming increasingly mature, providing strong support for enterprises to reduce procurement risks and ensure the long-term stable operation of projects. Considering multiple factors such as initial investment, operating costs, technological maturity, system compatibility, and supply chain support, alkaline electrolyzers remain the most pragmatic and preferred option for most companies to develop green hydrogen projects in the present and for some time to come.
